Latest data from 2018 reveal India’s worsening position in terms of unemployment. There are 31 million unemployed people in the country while the number of jobs to be created has been estimated to a mere 6, 00,000. This is trifling.
The thought of a person despairingly seeking work to earn for his or her family is a living reproach to our society and humanity. Unemployment is a tragedy and it is having an intensely detrimental effect on the lives of those who endure the brunt of it.
Major Causes of Unemployment
- Immobility of Work Force
Some areas are not well-developed enough and lack job opportunities. Sometimes, people from these areas are unwilling to migrate to new places in search of jobs. They choose to stay close with their families and remain plunged in poverty.
Illiteracy is a vindictive evil that skulk our societal grounds. Unless there is awareness among the families to send their kids to school people will remain pinned down to the vicious cycle of illiteracy and unemployment. Without the knowledge of reading and writing the people will never be able to get a job for themselves. Joint families, caste-system, gender biasness etc. are all causes of illiteracy.
- Increasing Population
With an increase in population the resources of capital formation are affected. The resources are consumed in water, electrical, clothing, food etc. Thus saving and investments are reduced and jobs created are lesser than what is actually needed. The rate of employment expansion when compared to the requirement of the population is very less.
What Can be Done to Reduce Unemployment
Government of India has in place several development schemes such as the PMKVY or the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna which helps the youth to develop industry level skills so they can get employed. Yet in the last few years the IT sector of India has seen a dip in their employment process. Employees have steadily been laid off and downsizing continues to happen.
Progress in Artificial Intelligence and other newer technologies are not helping people who have a lower level skill-set in IT. The economy requires focusing on increasing the quality of education and the skills that are being imparted. The teachings at school need to be more employable driven.
Awareness in the rural areas on the social norms that exist can help in diminishing the rate of unemployment. Gender inequality, caste system, illiteracy, laid of attitude of the people, joint family system etc. are some of the issues that need to be addressed.
Unemployment isn’t a small issue which can be taken down alone. However, we can definitely do our part in reducing it in our society in our own small way. Here is what we can do:
- Encourage literacy throughout the country.
- Awareness campaigns in nearby areas to increase mobility of the people so they can find jobs by migrating to other cities.
- Awareness campaigns to fight the mentioned social evils so there can be an overall enhancement in the people and in the way they handle their lives thereby helping them to find employment.
